Terms of use
These terms apply to the searchz app and searchz.eu. You agree to them when you create an account. In short: be decent to other people. There is no tolerance for objectionable content or abusive users, and we remove anyone who breaks these rules.
1. Your account
- You need to be at least 16.
- Use your own details, one account per person. Keep your password to yourself: you're responsible for what happens with your account.
- You can delete your account at any time in the app: Profile → Delete account, or on searchz.eu: your profile → Delete your account.
2. No tolerance for abuse
In your name, your picture and your messages, and towards anyone you meet on the map or in chats, don't:
- harass, bully, threaten or stalk anyone, or tell anyone to hurt themselves;
- use slurs or hate speech about anyone's race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, disability or anything else they are;
- send sexual content or unwanted advances, and never anything sexual involving minors;
- share violent, extremist or illegal content;
- give songs, albums or your artist name a disrespectful name: insults, swearing or slurs. Free music with such names isn't on searchz either;
- spam, scam, pretend to be someone else, or share other people's personal details;
- try to break, overload or misuse searchz.
The worst words are filtered out automatically. Breaking these rules gets the content removed and the account blocked or deleted, without warning.
3. Reporting and blocking
- Report someone from their profile or from a chat. Block them so they can't message you or see you on the map, and you don't see them.
- Report a song (an artist's upload, or a free song) from its ••• menu or its Song info in the app. Rights holders and anyone else can also use the notice form.
- We look at reports within 24 hours, and remove content and accounts that break these terms.
- Anything else worrying? Use the contact form.
4. The map
- You're only on the map when you turn it on, and only while searchz is open. People within 75 m who are on the map too see your name, picture and what you're playing.
- Take care with people you only know from the app. If you meet someone, do it in a public place and tell a friend.
- You can turn the map off at any time in your profile.
5. The music
- searchz plays three kinds of music, in Discover and everywhere else in the app: songs from Apple Music as 30-second previews (the full songs are on Apple Music); free music on searchz's own server, public-domain and Creative Commons songs (CC0, CC BY, BY-SA and BY-ND only) that play whole, with the credit their licence asks for; and songs artists upload themselves, which play whole too.
- Songs from searchz (free music and uploads) can be downloaded in the app to play offline. Apple Music previews can't.
- Artists who upload their own music confirm they own all the rights to it, and agree to the artist terms as well.
- searchz isn't affiliated with Apple, Spotify or YouTube.
6. Subscriptions
- Subscribing is optional and you pick the amount: it's a way to support the artists who upload their music to searchz. As a thank-you, subscribers choose the colour of the ring around their picture.
- Every month 99% of it is split by how long you listened. Time on an artist's uploads goes to that artist, wherever you heard them, Discover included. Time on free music and on Apple Music previews goes to searchz. searchz keeps the other 1%. The app shows an estimate before you subscribe, and the actual split every month.
- In the iPhone app you subscribe through Apple, from €1 a month. It's charged to your Apple ID and renews every month until you cancel it, at least 24 hours before the month ends, in your iPhone's Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Changing the amount works the same way. Refunds go through Apple. Apple's standard terms for apps apply too.
- For App Store payments, what reaches searchz after VAT and Apple's share is what's split.
7. Our part
We do our best to keep searchz running well, but we can't promise it's always available or free of mistakes, and we may change or stop parts of it. As far as the law allows, we're not responsible for indirect damage from using searchz. Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have by law.
8. Changes
If we change these terms, the app asks you to agree again before you can use chats and the map.
